The FDR Memorial was opened in 1997, its four outdoor "gallery" rooms designed to highlight the achievements of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's twelve years as President. Bronze sculptures of FDR and his wife, Eleanor, along with waterfalls and remembrance pools, offset inscriptions from the president's best-known speeches. In a belated nod to the fact that FDR was crippled by polio (a fact kept from the American people throughout his presidency), it's the first memorial in DC purposely designed to be wheelchair-accessible. -- location id = 41982 -->
