The remote
northern interior
of California, cut off from the coast by the
Shasta Cascade
range and dominated by forests, lakes and mountains, is largely uninhabited too, and infrequently visited. I-5 leads through the heart of this near wilderness, forging straight through the unspectacular farmland of
Sacramento Valley
to
Redding
- the region's only buses follow this route. Redding isn't much of a place in itself, but it's a good base for the
Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity area
and the more demanding
Lassen National Volcanic Park
. Mountaineers and the spiritually-minded flock to
Mount Shasta
, which is close enough to the volcanic
Lava Beds
at the very northeastern tip of the state for them to be a long but feasible day's car trip.
