Santa Cruz: Eating, drinking and nightlife
The main drag of Pacific Avenue , peppered with many relaxed restaurants and bars , is easily the best spot in town for watching locals parade past. Santa Cruz has the central coast's rowdiest nightlife , ranging from coffee houses to nightclubs where the music varies from surf-thrash to reggae to the rock of local resident Neil Young and sometimes all on the same dance floor. Supposedly a major gay hangout, but really draws a mixed crowd for its techno and hip-hop DJs on weekends.
The Catalyst 1011 Pacific Ave tel 831/423-1336. Medium-sized club that's one of the best bets for catching big-name touring artists and up-and-coming locals.
Club Dakota 1209 Pacific Ave tel 831/454-9030. Gay and lesbian bar popular with locals and the occasional out-of-towner.
Gabriella Café 910 Cedar St tel 831/457-1677. Elegant Californian cuisine in a comfortable setting.
Kuumbwa Jazz Center 320 Cedar St tel 831/427-2227. Friendly and intimate spot showcasing both traditional and modern jazz.
Miramar Fish Grotto 45 Municipal Wharf tel 831/423-4441. One of several good seafront restaurants on the wharf, with stunning oceanside views.
Palookaville 1133 Pacific Ave tel 831/454-0600. A local club favorite, home to touring bands and rising regional talent.
Zachary's 819 Pacific Ave tel 831/427-0646. One of the many casual cafés along this stretch, with good vistas for people-watching.
