St Petersburg's beaches: Beach practicalities

Hotels here tend to be filled with package tourists, and are always pricier than the motels that line mile after mile of Gulf Boulevard - typically $80 in the high season, anywhere between $50 and $80 in the low. Remember, too, that you'll pay $5-10 extra for a room on the beach side of Gulf Boulevard compared with an identical room on the inland side. At St Pete Beach the best bets are the Ritz , 4237 Gulf Blvd (tel 727/360-7642, ; $75-100), or the secluded old Florida Dolphin , 6801 Sunset Way (tel 727/360-7233; $75-100).

It's easy to find a decent place to eat around the beaches. Hurricane Seafood Restaurant , 807 Gulf Way (tel 727/360-9558), has a well-priced menu of the freshest seafood. Pep's Sea Grille , 5895 Gulf Blvd (tel 727/367-3550), creates inspired combinations of moderately priced pasta and seafood. In Clearwater Beach, Frenchy's Shrimp and Oyster Café , 41 Baymont Sttel 727/446-3607), cooks up good grouper burgers and shrimp sandwiches.
