Savannah: Entertainment and nightlife
Savannah's nightlife is laid-back, if unusually strict about requiring ID. Everything is fairly close together, ranged between the City Market and the river. There's an annual jazz festival in late September. Gay club, where drag acts occasionally include Lady Chablis, from "The Book."
The Pirate's House , Hannah's East/45 South 20 E Broad St tel 912/233-5757. Cool jazz in an informal atmosphere. Jazz veteran Ben Tucker plays with a variety of big names after 9pm upstairs in Hannah's East . For American fine dining head for the 45 South room.
Rail Pub 405 W Congress St tel 912/238-1311. Lively, endearingly shabby multilevel bar frequented by a young crowd near the market.
Savannah Blues 411 W Congress St tel 912/447-5044. City Market club that features live blues nightly from 10pm.
606 East Café 319 W Congress St tel 912/233-2887. Funky student hangout with dance floor, pool tables and drag acts, as well as inexpensive entrees ($6-16).
Velvet Elvis 127 W Congress St tel 912/236-0665. Vintage beerhall, decorated to match the name, near City Market. Live jazz, indie rock, ska or R&B Wed-Sat, plus a "Steamy Seafood Patio" serving salads and shellfish.
