USA: Historic railroads

While Amtrak has a monopoly on long-distance rail travel, a number of historic or scenic railways , some steam-powered or running along narrow-gauge mining tracks, bring back the glory days of train travel. Many are purely tourist attractions, doing a full circuit through beautiful countryside in two or three hours, though some can drop you off in otherwise hard-to-reach wilderness areas. Popular lines include the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia (tel 304/456-4300 or 1-800/2255 982, ); the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in North Carolina (tel 1-800/872 4681, ); the Cumbres and Toltec line in Chama, New Mexico (tel 1-888/286-2737, ); Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Colorado (tel 1-800/872-4607, ); the Big Trees and Roaring Camp Railroad in Santa Cruz (tel 831/335-4484, ) and the Fort Bragg-Willits line (tel 707/964-6371 or 1-800/777 5865, ), both in California; and the Mount Hood Railroad (tel 541/386-3556 or 1-800/872 4611, ) outside Portland, Oregon.
