USA: Green Tortoise

One alternative to Long-Distance Bus Hell is the slightly countercultural Green Tortoise , whose buses, complete with foam cushions, bunks, fridges and rock music, ply the major cities of the west coast, running between Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. In summer, they also cross the country to New York and Boston, trips that amount to mini-tours of the nation, taking about a dozen days (for between $469 and $499, not including food) and allowing plenty of stops for hiking, river-rafting and hot springs. Other Green Tortoise excursions go to the major national parks (in 16 days for $629), south to Mexico ($329-$549) and north to Alaska ($1500 for 28 days including airfare, or $699 for 14 days, excluding flight). The main office is at 494 Broadway, San Francisco, CA 94133 (tel 415/956-7500 or 1-800/867-8647, ).
