Chicago: Rock clubs

Cubby Bear 1059 W Addison St tel 773/327-1662. A sports bar during the day - right next to Wrigley Field - this place transforms itself after dark into one of the city's most boisterous and eclectic live venues, popular with aging dinosaurs more than new bands, but still fun.

Double Door 1572 N Milwaukee Ave tel 773/489-3160. This former biker bar, now a hip and eclectic venue, anchors the music scene in the Wicker Park/Bucktown neighborhood. There's live music almost every night, and Sundays usually feature Liquid Soul, the acid jazz legends of Chicago.

Elbo 2871 N Lincoln Ave tel 773/549-5549. Mostly indie/alternative bands on the way up.

Empty Bottle 1035 N Western Ave tel 773/276-3600. More up-and-coming indie, along with avant-garde jazz, and progressive country.

House of Blues 329 N Dearborn St tel 312/527-2583. Despite its name, this Near North venue puts on all kinds of music.

Metro 3730 N Clark St tel 773/549-0203. Arguably the top spot in the city, this club, in an old cinema building, regularly hosts young English bands trying to break in Stateside, and DJ mixes.
