Martha's Vineyard: Eating and drinking

It's not at all hard to find something to eat on Martha's Vineyard. The ports in particular have rows of places to tempt tourists just off the ferries. Only in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs can you order alcohol with meals, but you can bring your own elsewhere. Many pubs, too, serve inexpensive food, though the people partaking of it often look like they're on a break from a Ralph Lauren photo shoot. Wear Nautica if you want to blend in with the locals.

The Black Dog Bakery 480 State Rd, Vineyard Haven tel 508/693-4786. Skip the overrated Black Dog Tavern next door and stock up on delicious muffins and breads for the ferry ride back.

Giordano's 107 Circuit Ave, Oak Bluffs tel 508/693-0184. Crowded and reasonably priced Italian place, often closed out of season.

Lambert's Cove West Tisbury tel 508/693-2298. The restaurant at this country inn is a gem, set in over seven acres of lawn and serving vegetables grown on the property; try the delectable soups. Reservations suggested.

Louis' 350 State Rd, Vineyard Haven tel 508/693-3255. Lively, well-priced Italian place that also serves clams, located right near the ferry dock.

The Newes from America attached to the Kelley House Inn , 23 Kelley St, Edgartown tel 508/627-4397. Swill 500 beers in this atmospheric pub (not necessarily all in the same night) and they'll name a stool after you.

The Wharf Lower Main St, Edgartown tel 508/627-9966. One of the better-priced seafood joints on the island, on the east side of town, with home-brewed ales on the premises.

Zapotec 10 Kennebec Ave, Oak Bluffs tel 508/693-6800. Exciting seafood variations based on Mexican cuisine.
