Berkshires: Practicalities

Much of the accommodation in the Berkshires is concentrated in Lenox and neighboring Lee; when the Tanglewood concerts are on, prices naturally go through the roof and a last-minute vacancy is almost impossible to find. The only rooms in Lee for under $80 are in the Super 8 Motel at 170 Housatonic St (tel 413/243-0143 or 1-800/800-8000; $75-100). For slightly more, you can stay at the historic Merrell Inn in South Lee, an atmospheric 200-year-old roadside inn (1565 Pleasant St, Rte-102; tel 413/243-1794 or 1-800/243-1794, ; $75-160). In Lenox, the Brook Farm Inn at 15 Hawthorne St (tel 413/637-3013, ; $100-160) is a welcoming B&B; the Best WesternBlack Swan Inn (tel 413/243-2700 or 1-800/876-7926; $100-130) at 435 Laurel St on Rte-20 in Lee has lakefront doubles. Williamstown has several mid-priced motels, as well as some stately accommodation - like the 100-room Williams Inn on Main Street (tel 413/458-9371 or 1-800/828-0133, ; $130-160). The Red Lion Inn is one of the grander edifices on Main Street, Stockbridge (tel 413/298-5545; $160-200); rooms are expensive, but the Lion's Den bar and restaurant downstairs is fun. If you're hungry, the Church Street Cafe , 65 Church St, Lenox (tel 413/637-2745), is good value and the friendly Sullivan Station , a converted railroad station in Lee (tel 413/243-2082), serves standard American food such as prime rib, pork chops and clam chowder, plus a selection of beers on tap.
