Provincetown: Eating

Food in Provincetown can be expensive: the snack bars around MacMillan Wharf are generally extortionate, and the - undeniably good - nouvelle cuisine in the trendy gay restaurants can be $10 for a salad and a coffee. Portuguese bakeries, relics of early settlement, and bland family restaurants abound on Commercial Street.

Bubala's by the Bay 183 Commercial St tel 508/487-0773. Breakfast, lunch or dinner on the water in a local and fun hangout serving all kinds of sandwiches, seafood and breakfast items.

Café Heaven 199 Commercial St tel 508/487-9639. Light and airy café serving all-day breakfasts, espresso coffee and creative salads from $5. Open 8am-3pm and 6-9.30pm.

Ciro & Sal's 4 Kiley Court tel 508/487-6444. Tasty, traditional Italian cooking, though quite expensive. Reservations are recommended.

Post Office Café 303 Commercial St tel 508/487-3892. Small, gay-run restaurant serving healthy lunches and dinners for $10-20. Gay/feminist cabaret performed nightly.

Spiritus Pizza 190 Commercial St tel 508/487-2808. Combination pizza place and coffee bar with a scene that intensifies as the night marches on.

The Squealing Pig 335 Commercial St tel 508/487-4822. Excellent pub with a classic name right in the middle of town, featuring live music some nights.
