Mount Desert Island: Getting there

If you're driving , Mount Desert is easy enough to get to, along Hwy-3 off US-1, though in high summer roads on the island get congested (and the horse-drawn tours don't help). Public transportation , however, is minimal. Greyhound buses run to Bar Harbor from Bangor for perhaps a couple of months in summer, starting in mid-June. Concord Trailways has a seasonal shuttle between Bar Harbor and the Bangor airport, with connecting service to Boston's Logan airport - reservations are required (tel 207/942-8686 or 1-888/741-8686). West Coastal Connections (tel 207/546-2823 or 1-800/596-2823) goes as far as Ellsworth and Bar Harbor, as does Downeast Transportation (Mon, Wed & Fri; tel 207/667-5796), which also runs buses across the island from Bar Harbor to Southwest Harbor (Mon & Thurs) and Northeast Harbor (Tues & Wed).

Nearby Hancock City/Bar Harbor Airport (tel 207/667-7432) has a limited service run by Colgan Air (tel 1-800/272-5488); Bangor International Airport, 45 miles away, is served by Northwest, Delta and Continental. The Cat   high-speed catamaran takes under three hours to link Bar Harbor with Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (June-Sept $55; Oct to mid-June $45; ferries leave Bar Harbor daily 8am, return from Yarmouth 3.45pm, July-Aug 1pm, 3.45pm and 8.45pm). For reservations, contact Bay Ferries (tel 207/288-3395 or 1-888/249-7245, ) or visit their office at 65 Main St.
