Kansas City: Nightlife and entertainment
Check out Kansas City's reviving jazz and blues scene, especially the authentic dives holding wonderful jam sessions into the early hours. Downtown is otherwise pretty dead by mid-evening, and most people head to Westport for nightlife from country-and-western to alternative rock.Blayney's 415 Westport Rd tel 816/561-3747. A good Westport venue with live blues Tues & Wed; open until 3am.
The Grand Emporium 3832 Main St tel 816/531-7557. R&B, blues, reggae and jazz, with superb Cajun and Jamaican food. Twice voted the best blues club in America by the National Blues Foundation.
The Hurricane 4048 Broadway tel 816/783-0884. Trendy dance club in Westport operating until the wee hours.
Jazz/A Louisiana Kitchen 1823 W 39th St tel 816/531-5556. Cajun cuisine and live jazz and blues.
Kiki's Bon Ton Maison 1515 Westport Rd tel 816/931-9417. Louisiana-style food, plus Cajun and zydeco music on Wed & Sat.
Mutual Musicians Foundation 1823 Highland Ave tel 816/471-5212. National Historic Landmark in the 18th and Vine district. Fierce jam sessions begin 1.30am Fri & Sat, with musicians competing in a frenzy for hours. Things can get a bit rough, and is not recommended for women alone.
Phoenix Piano Bar and Grill 302 W 8th St at Central Ave tel 816/472-0001. Downtown jazz piano venue featuring Sat afternoon sessions.
