Two thousand lakes and a thousand miles of rivers, threading between thick forests and glorious meadows, weave a blue-and-green carpet below the tightly packed peaks of
GLACIER NATIONAL PARK
- a haven for bighorn sheep, mountain goats, black bears and threatened grizzlies, wolves and mountain lions. Though the park still holds fifty small glaciers, its name comes from the fact that these immense valleys were carved by huge flows of ice, millennia ago. Crisp air, freezing waterfalls and year-round snow combine to give the impression of being very close to the Arctic Circle; in fact, the latitude here is lower than that of London.
