camping
off the beaten track, try the excellent Cross Ranch State Park (tel 701/794-3731; vehicle fee $4, campsites $5-11), thirty minutes north of Bismarck on Route 1806. Overlapped by a six-thousand-acre Nature Preserve, the park features sixteen miles of trails. Alternatively, you can camp in Fort Lincoln State Park.
