Bismarck and Mandan: Practicalities

Bismarck's Greyhound terminal is at 3750 E Rosser Drive; its visitor center is at 1600 Burnt Boat Drive (Mon-Fri 7.30am-7pm, Sat 8am-6pm, Sun 10am-5pm; tel 701/222-4308 or 1-800/767-3555, ). The Public Library, 515 N 5th St (tel 701/222-6410), has free internet access. For clean, though small, downtown doubles, try the Budget Inn Express , 122 E Thayer Ave (tel 701/255-1450; $35-50). Great rooms, a pool and breakfast are on offer at Fairfield Inn , which has two locations, one near the airport at 135 Ivy Ave (tel 701/223-9293; $75-100), the other near the I-94/US-83 interchange at 1120 E Century Ave (tel 701/223-9077; $75-100). For camping off the beaten track, try the excellent Cross Ranch State Park (tel 701/794-3731; vehicle fee $4, campsites $5-11), thirty minutes north of Bismarck on Route 1806. Overlapped by a six-thousand-acre Nature Preserve, the park features sixteen miles of trails. Alternatively, you can camp in Fort Lincoln State Park.

Dining and nightlife are plentiful in Bismarck. Peacock Alley , 422 E Main St (tel 701/255-7917), in a downtown hotel that was once the headquarters of the progressive Non-Partisan League, serves Cajun, Italian and American cuisine, with lunch specials in the classy adjoining bar. In Mandan, the Drug Store and Soda Fountain , 316 W Main St (tel 701/663-5900), is a good place to grab a cheap lunch, espresso or ice cream. There is fine dining at Meriwether's Restaurant at the Port of Bismarck (tel 701/224-0455), where the Lewis & Clark riverboat takes tourists on narrated historical rides (tel 701/255-4233, $12 daytime, $30 dinner cruise).
