Lincoln: Practicalities

Lincoln's Greyhound station is downtown at 940 P St, while Amtrak passes through 201 N 7th St at crazy early-morning hours. Star-Tran (tel 402/476-1234) runs good local buses (85¢). The visitor center is in Lincoln Station, right next to Amtrak (June-Sept Mon-Fri 9am-8pm, Sat 8am-5pm, Sun noon-5pm; rest of year Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat 10am-4pm, Sun noon-5pm; tel 402/434-5348 or 1-800/423-8212, ). Except on football weekends, it's easy to find inexpensive accommodation out by the airport, off I-80 exit 399 - at the Inn 4 Less motel (tel 402/475-4511; $35-50), for example. Downtown, however, has a shortage of budget rooms: the Holiday Inn , 9th and O streets (tel 402/475-4011; $75-100), is good value; the HI-Cornerstone   hostel , 640 N 16th St (tel 402/476-0355; up to $35), in a church on the edge of campus, offers basic bunks; members $10, nonmembers $13. The Branched Oak State Park, off Raymond Road from Hwy-79, has tent sites for $3-7; the more expensive sites have showers.

The downtown restaurants tend to be less than compelling, with grills, pizzerias and family diners predominating. The Oven , 201 N 8th St (tel 402/475-6118), offers Indian cuisine with a range of cheap breads and inventive specials, while the Italian menu at cafeteria-style Valentino's , 232 N 13th and Q streets (tel 402/475-1501), is fast and well priced. The Zoo , 136 N 14th St (tel 402/435-8754), attracts big-name jazz and blues acts who drop in en route between Chicago and Kansas City; Duffy's Bar , 1412 O St (tel 402/474-3543), pulls in a younger crowd and some good rock bands. Across the street at 1329 O St, O'Rourke's Lounge (tel 402/435-8052) is a lively, well-priced hangout. The Historic Haymarket District , down by the Amtrak station, holds a further selection of bars and restaurants, including The Mill , at 800 P St, which offers good coffee and internet access.
