Carlsbad Caverns National Park: Practicalities

No matter how you get to Carlsbad Caverns, you have to cross seemingly endless miles of the Llano Estacado , the deathly flat rangeland that covers southeast New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle. The route from El Paso, Texas, has the advantage of passing through Guadalupe Mountains National Park , a beautiful though little-visited complement to Carlsbad, which offers superb camping.

WHITE'S CITY is not so much a town as a privately owned tourist complex, which as well as featuring a little water park provides the closest accommodation and camping to the national park, including the mock-adobe Best Western Cavern Inn (tel 505/785-2291 or 1-800/CAVERNS, ; $75-100); the White's City RV Park (same number), which has tent camping space; and the Velvet Garter Restaurant (same number). The town of CARLSBAD itself, 25 miles north of White's City, holds little of interest outside its many motels, such as the central Holiday Inn , 601 S Canal St (tel 505/885-8500 or 1-800/742-9586; $100-130), and the clean, comfortable Super 8 , 3817 National Parks Hwy (tel 505/887-8888; $50-75). Lucy's , 701 S Canal St (closed Sun; tel 505/887-7714), serves good Mexican food.
