At one side of City Hall Park the venerable
Woolworth Building
looks on. Money, ornament and prestige mingle in the 1913 "Cathedral of Commerce," whose soaring, graceful lines are fringed with Gothic decoration more for fun than any portentous allusion. Within, vaulted ceilings ooze honey-gold mosaics - even the brass mailboxes are magnificent. The whole building has a well-humored panache more or less extinct in today's architecture.
