Loosely speaking, SoHo's diversions get grittier as you drop south. Still, Broome and Grand streets, formerly full of dilapidated storefronts and dusty windows, have recently become home to a small band of boutiques, galleries, cafés and eclectic restaurants. The ultrachic (and ultraexpensive) SoHo Grand Hotel occupies the corner of Canal and West Broadway. If you don't want to fork out the dough for a room, at least look around the lobby, designed by Larry Bogdanow, or have a cocktail at the bar. Canal Street links the Holland Tunnel with the Manhattan Bridge and marks SoHo's southern entrance, though in truth the street is in look and feel more Chinatown than any other area.
