Lancaster County - Pennsylvania Dutch Country: Arrival and information

The Pennsylvania Turnpike sweeps across the north of the region, but most activity is concentrated further south near the east-west US-30. Amtrak arrives at the train station at 53 McGovern Ave, as do buses from Capital Trailways and Greyhound (tel 717/397-4861). The bustling Pennsylvania Dutch Visitors Bureau , just off US-30 at 501 Greenfield Rd (daily 8.30am-5pm, later closing in summer; tel 717/299-8901, ), does an excellent job of providing orientation and advice on accommodation. In Lancaster City itself, the smaller and less resourceful visitor center at 100 S Queen St in the Southern Farmers' Market (April-Oct Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm, Sat 9am-4pm, Sun 10am-3pm; tel 717/397-3531) has maps for self-guided walking tours. It also organizes guided tours (April-Oct Mon-Sat 10am & 1.30pm, Sun 1.30pm; $7).

Visitors keen to learn about Pennsylvania Dutch culture should head to the excellent People's Place , Main Street, Intercourse, eleven miles east of Lancaster City, which has a well-stocked bookstore, an informative if sentimental slide show, an Amish museum and the film Hazel's People , plus displays of quilts and artwork (June-Aug Mon-Sat 9.30am-8pm, hours vary in winter; $5; tel 717/768-7171). The Mennonite Information Center , 2209 Millstream Rd off US-30, organizes lodging with Mennonite families. Call at least two hours ahead for a guide to take you on a two-hour, $28 tour in your car (Mon-Sat 8am-5pm; tel 717/299-0954, ).
