Harrisburg and Hershey: Practicalities

Amtrak trains share the central station at Fourth and Chestnut with Greyhound, whose buses also stop in Hershey at 337 W Chocolate St (tel 717/397-4861 or 1-800/231-2222). Harrisburg's visitor center at 114 Walnut St (tel 717/232-1377, ) provides maps and a suggested downtown walking tour. Hotels on the outskirts of town, aimed toward business travelers and politicians, are a snip compared to prices in DC or Philly. Quality Inn Riverfront , 525 S Front St (tel 717/233-1611; $50-75), is in downtown Harrisburg, while just across the river in leafy Camp Hill is the Radisson Penn Harris (tel 717/763-7117; $75-100), with good-value rooms in relaxing surroundings. Alternatives in Hershey include the Spinners Inn , 845 E Chocolate Ave (tel 717/533-9157 or 1-800/800-5845; $75-100), with a decent restaurant, and (yes, really) the Chocolatetown Motel (March-Dec; tel 717/533-2330; $50-75), a mile further on at no. 1806. More upscale lodging is available at the Hotel Hershey (tel 717/533-2171; $200-250/$250+) complete with an onsite spa, offering kitschy, chocolate-based beauty treatments and strangely lacking any sense of fun. Call the Hershey Visitor's Information line tel 717/534-4900 for more listings.

Budget restaurants line Second Street in downtown Harrisburg, the best being Fisaga , Locust & N Second St (tel 717/257-1328), which serves good basic sandwiches and pastas at reasonable prices. Deweys Dry Dock & Deli , 33 N Second St (tel 717/233-3700), does good sandwiches and fries, while Nick's 1014 , 1014 N Third St (tel 717/238-8844), and Scott's , 212 Locust St (tel 717/234-7599), are popular bar/grills with music some nights.
