Pittsburgh: Eating
Eating downtown can prove expensive and the area is rather deserted at night, but there's a growing range of places in the adjacent Strip District and good neighborhood Mediterranean and eastern European restaurants along and around East Carson Street on the South Side. Station Square and Mount Washington cater to a more upmarket crowd, while Oakland is, as you might expect, home to an array of cheap student hangouts - look out for the ultra-cheap mobile ethnic food vans at lunchtime. A little further east, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill have a number of good mid-priced places.Grand Concourse 1 Station Square tel 412/261-1717. Pricey, plush seafood restaurant in a gorgeous setting inside the Station Square complex.
Grandview Saloon 1212 Grandview Ave tel 412/431-1400. Relaxed Mount Washington restaurant, usually packed with a young crowd enjoying huge plates of pasta. Arrive early for a deck table with a view.
Gullifty's 1922 Murray Ave tel 412/521-8222. Squirrel Hill establishment serving fine pastas, meat dishes and sumptuous sweets. Look out for the twice-yearly Garlic Festival (usually April and Oct).
Kaya 2000 Smallman St tel 412/261-6565. Stylish Caribbean restaurant in the Strip District with a varied vegetarian selection. Huge range of beers, rums and other spirits.
Kim's Coffee Shop 5447 Penn Ave tel 412/362-7019. Friendly, cozy and very cheap Vietnamese joint also serving some Chinese and Thai - the spicy cold Beef Siamese is a treat. Licensed but you can BYOB too. Closed Mon.
La Feria 5527 Walnut St tel 412/682-4501. Colorful upstairs Peruvian shop-cum-restaurant offering a limited but tasty selection of inexpensive specials from the Andes. BYOB.
Mallorca 2228 E Carson St tel 412/488-1818. In a smart setting on the South Side, this restaurant serves excellent paella and Mediterranean dishes, as well as fine sangria. Try the delicious goat in red wine sauce.
Penn Brewery Troy Hill Rd and Vinial St tel 412/237-9402. On the North Side, this is Pittsburgh's longest-established brewpub, serving decent German food.
Seventh Street Grille 130 7th St, Century Building tel 412/338-0303. Excellent Californian-and Italian-influenced menus strong on pasta and seafood. Very popular despite being a little pricey.
Star of India 412 S Craig St tel 412/682-3000. Indian restaurant in Oakland offering tasty north Indian cooking. Wash down the great lunch buffet with a smooth, creamy lassi.
Valhalla 1150 Smallman St tel 412/434-1440. At the start of the Strip, close to Greyhound, this trendy microbrewery with cool decor serves a range of specialties like mango salmon and veal veronese, as well as its own beer.
Yumwok/Lulu's Noodles 400 S Craig St tel 412/687-7777. Combined establishment serving filling noodles and good standard pan-Asian cuisine at bargain prices, justifiably popular with students. BYOB.
