Bohemian and fun Montrose begins at the junction of Smith and Elgin streets. It's all quirky sleaze, chock-full of tattoo parlors, vintage clothing stores, experimental art galleries, and junk shops selling barbed-wire cacti and other curiosities. While the forces of gentrification are evidently at work, don't think it's all gone Gap. Though the teenagers who once cruised the streets on Saturday night have been forced elsewhere and the strip joints have closed down, this has long been the base of a very visible gay community, and a high concentration of gay bars and clubs remains.
