Houston: Bars and clubs

Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club 5731 Kirby Dr tel 713/523-9999. The city's best blues, plus occasional zydeco nights in the University area.

Emo's 2700 Albany St tel 713/523-8503. A little hard to find on the edge of Montrose, but this slacker bar gets in the first-rate alternative bands from the US and around the world. Beer prices are below average, too.

Engine Room 1515 Pease St tel 713/654-7846. Pool tables and aggressive indie line-up (think Limp Bizkit on the way up), plus a crowd that seems culled from more than one economic class.

Fabulous Satellite Lounge 3616 Washington Ave tel 713/869-2665, . Hosts the cream of Texan roots bands and singer-songwriters.

The Last Concert Café 1403 Nance St tel 713/226-8563. East of downtown, in an arty and isolated area. Good, cheap Tex-Mex food and live rock and roots bands in the back garden.

McGonigel's Mucky Duck 2425 Norfolk St tel 713/226-8563. A great folk club featuring national acts, as well as a terrific Irish jam session on Wed.

Rudyard's 2010 Waugh Dr tel 713/521-0521. Solid indie bands amid the raucous atmosphere make up for somewhat surly service.

Sam's Boat and Sam's Place 5720 Richmond Ave tel 713/781-2628. If you were wondering about the Richmond scene, here's its zenith, in all its post-college glory. Yes, it's the bar shaped like a boat.

Spotlight Karaoke 5901 Westheimer Rd tel 713/266-7768. A popular karaoke joint seemingly frozen in 1978, with a great selection of songs and a dedicated crowd.
