ST GEORGE was the winter home of Brigham Young and other early Mormon leaders, who basked in the comparatively mild climate of "Utah's Dixie." Set at the foot of a broad, reddish-brown sandstone cliff, it's a pretty enough town, centering around the fine 1877 LDS Temple at 440 South 300 East, the oldest still in use anywhere. The rest of the town holds quaint pioneer homes, including Brigham Young's much-restored adobe house on 200 North First West (daily 9am-dusk; free).

Travelers driving up I-15 can call in at the Utah Visitor Center , just inside the state line (daily: summer 8am-9pm; winter 8am-5pm; tel 435/673-4542). Virtually all St George's commercial life takes place along the main drag, St George Boulevard, where the twenty or so motels include the popular Dixie Palm at no.185 E (tel 435/673-3531; up to $35). Among various good restaurants in the Ancestor Square development is the Pizza Factory , 1 W St George Blvd (tel 435/628-1234). The St George Shuttle bus (tel 435/628-8320) connects with Las Vegas and Salt Lake City on request.
