Port Townsend: Practicalities
Pick up a map and information in Port Townsend at the helpful visitor center , 2437 E Sims Way (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 360/385-2722 or 1-888/365-6978, ), about twelve blocks south of the Ferry Terminal on Hwy-20. There's a good choice of places to stay in town, but prices are fairly high - with the exception of the HI-Olympic Hostel , 272 Battery Way (tel 360/385-0655 or 1-800/909-4776; $17 per person), in Fort Worden State Park - and vacancies rare in the height of summer. The town's specialty is its B&Bs , the best of which occupy grand mansions uptown, such as the bluffside James House , 1238 Washington St (tel 360/385-1238 or 1-800/385-1238, ; $130-160), and the delightful Quimper Inn , 1306 Franklin St (tel 360/385-1060 or 1-800/557-1060, ; $100-130). There are also several fine, nineteenth-century downtown hotels , the best being the renovated Palace Hotel , 1004 Water St (tel 360/385-0773 or 1-800/962-0741, ; $50-130), a surprisingly affordable spot with bayside views and elegant period furnishings. Even cheaper, several motels are available, such as The Tides Inn , 1807 Water St (tel 360/385-0595 or 1-800/822-8696, ; $75-100), located on the waterfront.Port Townsend, the peninsula's best place to eat and drink , has no shortage of excellent restaurants. The Salal Café , 634 Water St (tel 360/385-6532), is a local favorite with decent omelettes and lunches at modest prices, while the best baked goods can be found at Bread & Roses , 230 Quincy St (tel 360/385-1044), serving great sandwiches and displaying the work of local artists as well. More upmarket alternatives include The Fountain Café , 920 Washington St (tel 360/379-9343), with innovative regional cuisine, and the Silverwater Café , 237 Taylor St (tel 360/385-6448), with good fresh seafood. In the nearby beach town of Port Hadlock , the Ajax Café , 271 Water St (tel 360/385-3450), serves up inventive Northwest seafood dishes and occasional live music.
