Milwaukee: Nightlife and entertainment
The concept of neighborhoods is vital to Milwaukee's nightlife. Brady Street in the near northeast, a counterculture haven in the 1960s, is now filled with Italian restaurants and bars. Walker's Point , on the edge of downtown, has all sorts of gay and straight watering holes, while the Polish locals can be found farther south. Downtown gets busy on the weekend, especially either side of the river on Water and Old World Third streets between Juneau and State.High culture in downtown Milwaukee revolves around the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts , 929 N Water St (tel 414/273-7206 or 1-888/612-3500, ), and the plush, historic Pabst Theater , 144 E Wells St (tel 414/286-3663). Nearby, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater , 108 E Wells St (tel 414/224-9490, ), has a reputation for risk-taking productions, as does the arty, eclectic Theatre X (tel 414/278-0555), in the Broadway Theater Center in the Third Ward, a restored warehouse district on the edge of downtown. The Center, 158 N Broadway, is also home to the adventurous Skylight Opera (tel 414/291-7800, ) and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre (tel 414/276-8842, ), where the focus is split between classical and contemporary plays.

Velvet Room 730 N Old World 3rd St tel 414/319-1190. Premier cocktail lounge with a fun, plush decor, billiards and "New American" menu.
Von Trier 2235 N Farwell Ave tel 414/272-1775. Black Forest decor and lots of imported beers - the Weise is a house specialty.
Zur Krone 839 S 2nd St tel 414/647-1910. This blue-collar bar has good atmosphere and beer selection.
